Diabufor XR contains the active substance metformin hydrochloride, which belongs to a group of medicines called biguanides, used to treat type 2 (insulin-independent) diabetes.
The drug is used to reduce the risk of developing type 2 diabetes in overweight adults when diet and exercise alone, used for 3 to 6 months, have not been sufficient to control blood glucose (sugar) levels.
Diabufor XR is also used in patients with type 2 diabetes when normal blood glucose (sugar) levels cannot be achieved with adherence to diet and exercise.
Diabufor XR extended-release tablets are specially formulated to release the drug slowly in the body.
Diabufor XR can be used as monotherapy or in combination with other oral antidiabetic drugs or insulin.
Treatment is usually started with a dose of 500 mg of Diabufor XR taken once daily. After approximately 2 weeks of taking the drug, the doctor may, based on blood glucose measurements, adjust the dose. The maximum daily dose of Diabufor XR is 2000 mg.
Usually the tablets should be taken once daily with an evening meal. In some cases, the doctor may recommend taking the tablets twice daily. Tablets should always be taken with a meal.
